For heritage speakers

You already speak Chinese.
Now learn to read it.

The first reading course built for heritage speakers — people who grew up hearing and speaking Chinese but never learned the characters. No pinyin drills. No “repeat after me: nǐ hǎo.” No starting over.

Sound familiar?

  • You nod along in the family group chat — then quietly tap translate.
  • At the restaurant you order from the English side of the menu, even though you know what 牛肉面 tastes like.
  • You can say 恭喜发财 — you couldn’t pick the characters out of a lineup.
  • Your grandmother writes the family news by hand. Someone always has to read it to you.
  • You’ve downloaded the apps. Lesson 1 was “Hello, my name is…” — a sentence you’ve been saying since you were two. You quit by Lesson 9.

None of this means you’re bad at Chinese. It means no one ever built a course for people like you — until now.

Why every course fails heritage speakers

Apps and classes are built for absolute beginners, so they spend 80% of your time teaching listening, speaking, and vocabulary — things you already own. You sit through a hundred hours of “this is a tone” to get crumbs of the one skill you actually lack.

Here’s the unfair advantage no beginner has: you already carry thousands of Chinese words in your head, by sound. Reading, for you, isn’t learning a language. It’s connecting symbols to a language that’s already there. That’s a dramatically smaller job — if the course is built around it.

AlreadyFluent teaches only literacy. Nothing you already know. Only the missing piece.

The method

1 · Anchor

Every new character is attached to a word you already say. You know fàn — dinner-table word since childhood. Meet 饭. You know mā, bà, jiě, dì. Meet 妈爸姐弟. First weeks feel less like studying, more like recognizing.

2 · Pattern

Chinese characters aren’t 3,000 random drawings — they’re built from ~200 reusable parts. We teach the radical and sound-component system natives use to guess new characters, so every character you learn makes the next ones cheaper.

3 · Immerse — in your real life

No textbook dialogues about Wang Ming’s pencil case. From week one you read the things you actually face: menus, the family group chat, red envelopes, signs, 小红书 posts, song lyrics. The 1,000 highest-frequency characters cover ~90% of everyday text. That’s the target. That’s enough to change your life in Chinese.

The 12-week founding cohort

WeeksModule
1–2The 100 characters you secretly already know — family words, numbers, food, 你我他
3–4The Menu Module — order anything, anywhere, from the Chinese side
5–6The Group Chat Module — read what 妈 actually said (and reply)
7–8Out in the world — signs, maps, stations, red envelopes, holidays
9–10The Internet in Chinese — 小红书, memes, comments, captions
11–12Letters home — read real handwriting; write your first real message back

Each week: 3 short video lessons (15 min/day), a spaced-review deck, one live group review (recorded if you can’t make it), and a private community of people with the exact same story.

Questions

Simplified or traditional?
The founding cohort teaches simplified (used in mainland China, Singapore, and most diaspora media), with traditional-character notes on every lesson. Strong demand will unlock a full traditional track — founding members vote.
I grew up with Cantonese / Hokkien / Shanghainese — does this work for me?
Yes, with honesty: characters are shared across Chinese languages, so the reading skill transfers fully. Audio is in Mandarin; where Cantonese sound-anchors differ, lessons include Canto notes. Many heritage Cantonese speakers read for meaning while keeping their own pronunciation — that works.
I understand Chinese but barely speak. Still for me?
Yes. The method anchors to listening vocabulary — words you recognize by ear. If you grew up around the language, your anchor set is bigger than you think.
How much time?
~15 minutes a day plus one optional 45-minute live review per week.
What if it’s not for me?
Full refund any time before the cohort starts; within the first 14 days of the cohort, same deal. We only want people who actually finish.

Replace the quote below with a real founder anecdote in your own voice (real person, real angle, real name). Remove this flag before launch.

“I grew up between two languages, and I’ve spent my career as a bilingual content creator watching brilliant, fully grown adults get treated like toddlers by language apps. My [cousin/friend — USE A REAL PERSON OR YOUR OWN ANGLE] speaks fluent Mandarin and orders from the English menu. This course exists for her.”
